Walking to Dunstanburgh Castle

Welcome to Footsteps - walking the beauty of Northumberland

If you prefer to go walking with a guide when you visit Northumberland, then please read on. Together we can explore the dramatic Northumberland Heritage Coast, the hills and valleys of the Northumberland National Park, the Border regions between England and Scotland and the stunning countryside around its many small market towns and villages.

When you walk with a Footsteps guide, you have time to enjoy the unique and beautiful Northumberland landscape. We will see castles, big skies and great views. We may hear the red grouse call ‘come out, come out’, marvel at the call of the curlew and the ‘mewing’ of the buzzard circling high overhead. In the Spring, wildflowers are everywhere and in August, the heather turns the hillsides purple as it blooms. There are historic landscapes and pre-historic features like Iron Age hill forts and the mysterious cup and ring marked rocks hidden away amongst the Cheviot Hills of Northumberland.

We walk in the footsteps of St. Cuthbert and St. Oswald, in the Ingram, Harthope and College Valleys, the latter is known as the most tranquil place in England and one of those places you have to see when you are here.

With Footsteps you choose your walk. Each day is different and each walk explores a different part of north Northumberland. You could be standing before the towering ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle on the North Sea coast one day, and soaking up the splendour of Linhope Spout, a spectacular waterfall in the Ingram Valley the next. You choose the walk that suits you and your walking guide will get you there and back again, sharing the beauty of Northumberland with you as we go.

Welcome to Northumberland and the Borders, the best place to walk in the United Kingdom.
